Carbon Offsetting
What is it?
Carbon offsetting allows a company to compensate for its emissions by financing a reduction in emissions elsewhere. While carbon offsetting does not require companies to reduce their emissions “in-house”, it provides an environmentally effective option for sectors where the potential for further emissions reductions is limited.

EU REGULATION 80/2009
OVERVIEW
The competitive dynamics of the airline market and the airline ticket distribution market are evolving rapidly and are being increasingly affected by new developments. Traditionally the neutral distribution channel has been powered by travel agencies and global distribution systems (GDS) and for decades, Regulation 80/2009 on the Code of Conduct for Computerised Reservation Systems (CRS) has provided regulations on how airline content should be displayed in the GDS.
BREXIT, UK AND EU AVIATION IMPACT
A number of members have raised questions as to the impact on their operations of Brexit; now that the withdrawal agreement has been ratified in London and Brussels. The relationship between the UK and the EU with regard to aviation will be negotiated during the transition period ending on 31 December 2020. There are, of course, a range of possibilities as to the outcome of those negotiations ranging from “business as usual” to a no-deal scenario.
EU261 revision on the Council agenda
As the revision of EU261 might not be on the agenda of the German presidency of the Council of the EU starting from 1 July, ERA co-signed a joint industry letter addressed to German authorities urging to resume discussions that had started well during the Croatian Presidency and were ended abruptly because of the pandemic. The letter - which can be downloaded below – draws the attention to the impact of passenger rights regulation on the financial health of airlines and the lack of clarity of the current rules and their many divergent interpretations.

Market-based measures
Market-based measures, also known as economic measures, play a big role in the decarbonisation of the sector as they complement the other solutions until the sector can rely only on in-sector emission reductions. For the airline industry, there are two types of economic measures available: a cap and trade system, like the EU ETS, and carbon offsetting, like CORSIA.

Sustainable aviation fuels
Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), will be crucial to decarbonise aviation in the short term. SAFs are available on the market as a certified drop-in fuel, blended with conventional jet fuel. There are currently 6 pathways for blending bio-based fuels with conventional aviation fuels that are certified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International, with the maximum blend allowed in these cases being 50%.
