HyImpulse consults on Northern Atlantic temporary airspace change

8 February 2022: HyImpulse Technology is a new German space company developing a small orbital launcher and sounding rockets, powered by green hybrid propulsion technology. Its first flight, SR75 will be a technology demonstrator. A consultation on a temporary airspace change facilitating the launch is open until 28 February.

ERA has been contacted by HyImpulse to inform about an establishment of a temporary airspace change during notified periods to enable the safe testing and demonstration of its sounding rocket, SR75.

HyImpulse and Saxa Vord Spaceport foresee the possibility of a maiden flight from the Shetland Islands later this year.

This would be an important milestone for both companies and a step towards enabling access to space in Europe. Involvement by Saxa Vord Spaceport in the SR75 launch would enable it to build up operations to reach the objective of being a UK orbital vertical launch site.

The Shetland Islands are considered particularly suitable from a flight safety perspective due to their geographical position and to the low volume of sea and air traffic, however it may have an impact on ERA members with operations in the area.

The establishment of a suitable temporary airspace structure to the north of the Shetland Islands would enable the HyImpulse rocket launch.

The process requires engagement with potential stakeholders in the area, who might be affected by this proposal.

Affected members are invited to carefully evaluate whether this airspace change would affect operations and if yes, to which extent your company might be affected.

A detailed description of the requested Temporary Danger Area along with a targeted engagement response feedback be found in the downloads section above (locked for members only).

Airlines affected are kindly requested to respond no later than 28 February 2022, 11:59 pm CET.
