Swedavia introduces CO2 emission charge
16 November 2021: From 1 January 2022, Swedish airport operator Swedavia will introduce a CO2 emission charge, or environmentally differentiated charge in its airports Stockholm Arlanda and Goteborg Landvetter.
Airport charges linked to take-off or landing shall be differentiated based on the aircrafts’ environmental impact in order to incentivise the use of more efficient aircraft. This means that the aircraft that emit more CO2 compared to the average should pay a penalty, which will finance a bonus for aircraft emitting less CO2.
Swedavia will compare the CO2 emissions based on the segments: e.g. smaller aircraft are compared to the average emission within its own segment. The CO2 metric used also differs based on the segment, as it varies between CO2 per MTOW or CO2 per seat.
