Network Manager Group Rerouting Tool for flight efficiency

14 May 2024: The Network Manager’s Group Rerouting Tool (GRRT) is designed to recalculate flight routes based on specific criteria, leveraging real-time network information and wind data available within the NM systems. Airlines can set parameters according to their own business requirements and be alerted when a more optimum routing option is available.

The NM flight efficiency implementation project by EUROCONTROL is a strategic initiative designed to enhance airspace utilisation and reduce the environmental footprint of flight operations. By leveraging the automated GRRT, which considers various factors like weather and network situation, aircraft operators can further optimise their flight plans and fly the most efficient trajectory.

This approach not only supports sustainable aviation but also offers economic benefits, aligning with the broader goals of reducing emissions and promoting greener skies.

The recently published GRRT guidelines document outlines the strategic provisions for implementing the NM’s flight efficiency project. It specifically targets operational stakeholders, including flight plan originators. Key aspects covered in the document include:

  • Customised GRRT templates: Details on how aircraft operators can tailor GRRT templates to their specific needs.
  • GRRT parameters: Information about the parameters used by the tool for route calculations.
  • Access and utilisation of GRRT results: Guidance on accessing and effectively utilising the GRRT output.

ERA has been supporting this initiative for some considerable time, with updates to the Operations Group at regular intervals since the project inception, with these guidelines being approved at the last Network Management Board held in April.
