ERA working group on PSOs and thin commercial routes

10 July 2023: Following the workshop held in May 2023 on the revision of the Air Services Regulation and essential air connectivity, ERA is setting up a dedicated Working Group aimed at addressing two topics: the revision of the Public Service Obligations framework and the development of new aid tools to support thin commercial routes. 

In particular, the Group will be focusing on:
•    How to improve the efficiency of the PSO framework, for routes for which a PSO structure is appropriate
•    Develop a new dedicated aid tool to support the start-up of new thin commercial routes, for routes not suitable for a PSO structure but which an airport/ local authority wants to fund. Such a tool should replace the existing start-up aid scheme set in the 2014 Aviation Guidelines recognized by everyone as no longer fit for purpose.

The Group will work on concrete proposals that will be submitted to the European Commission in the coming months.
