SESAR JU consults stakeholders
30 April 2024: The SESAR JU recently held a stakeholder consultation workshop on the ATM Master Plan to present the emerging ideas and collect input on the key research and deployment activities needed to make Europe the most efficient and environmentally friendly sky to fly in the world.
The European ATM Master Plan (ATM MP) serves as the roadmap for modernising Air Traffic Management (ATM). It guides the transition from the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme to deployment and lays the foundation for the next generation of ATM systems, aiming for a more sustainable and high-performing aviation sector by 2040.
At the SESAR Annual Conference held last October, the SESAR Joint Undertaking (S3JU) launched the European ATM Master Plan 2024 campaign, emphasising the need for co-operation and investment in breakthrough innovations.
During the conference, ERA along with other aviation associations adopted a joint industry declaration committing to work together to update the ATM MP.
The latest update will lay out how Europe is to manage the future air traffic growth while minimising environmental impact. Europe will see increasing numbers of aerial vehicles, including conventional aircraft and drones, operating seamlessly and safely in all airspace environments.
By moving towards a full trajectory-based free route operation, this will allow for better planning and execution of business and mission trajectories, reducing fuel consumption, emissions and noise impact, aligning with the EU’s climate-neutral aviation policy. The system infrastructure is expected to evolve with advanced digital technologies including a focus on AI, enabling cost-efficient services across national borders and see integrated airports and operational sites optimising airspace user operations in all weather conditions.
The outcomes of the workshop will be used in the further development of the updated European ATM Master Plan, which is planned to be approved by the SESAR JU Governing Board at the end of 2024.
In the downloads section (locked for members only) you can find the agenda, the pre-meeting materials (which provide a detailed overview of the vision, the rollout, the development and deployment priorities) and the full slide pack from the two days.
10 October 2023: The SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking held their annual conference on 10 October, where industry association handed over a joint declaration regarding the ATM Master Plan update and committed to work together to make European airspace the most efficient and environmentally friendly sky to fly in the world.
With post-COVID traffic expected to return to pre-pandemic levels next year, European ATM faces critical challenges. Overcoming these will be vital for capacity and sustainability.
Associations representing airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, aviation manufacturers and business aviation have therefore committed to joint action, aiming to transform the sector and work together to maximise capacity in the air, whilst further reducing the environmental footprint of flying.
A key technological pathway to this transformation in the coming years is the optimisation of the European air traffic management (ATM) system.
During the SESAR Annual Conference held on 10 October, the associations adopted a joint industry declaration committing to work together to update the EU ATM Master Plan, which serves as the common roadmap for SESAR and to make our industry truly sustainable and more efficient, for the benefit of all Europeans.
