EC proposes Digital Green Certificate
24 March 2021: The European Commission published on 17 March 2021 a proposal for a ‘Digital Green Certificate’. The Certificate will be a proof that a person that has been vaccinated against COVID-19, received a negative test result or recovered from COVID-19, allowing them to travel across the EU and opening the way for travel arrangements with third countries.
U-Space Regulation approved by EASA Committee
On 24 February, the EASA Committee approved the U-Space regulation, ahead of future adoption by the European Commission.
As previously communicated, ERA, as a member of the We Are All One in the Sky (WAAOITS) initiative, have voiced several ongoing concerns in the context of the U-Space regulation and communicated these to the Commission and the EU DGACs ahead of the EASA Committee that was held on 23 and 24 February.
Whilst these were noted, these issues were not seen by the Committee as significant enough to delay the approval by the Committee.
EU passenger rights: Swedish court ruling
24 March 2021: A Swedish court has stated that a strike organised by pilots’ trade unions does not constitute an extraordinary circumstance. Volotea, Air Nostrum and Dante Aeronautical present a 100% electric aircraft project to the European Recovery Fund
A consortium formed by Volotea, Air Nostrum and Dante Aeronautical has presented to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) a fleet electrification project in the context of the Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Program of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience.
European Environmental Agency’s Train or Plane? Report
24 March 2021: In light of the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport by 90 per cent by 2050, the European Environmental Agency published a report on Train or Plane? in order to inform decision-makers on the current status and environmental impact of rail and air transport in Europe. Making a shift towards the most sustainable transport modes can contribute to the emissions reductions goal. The report identifies the shift from air to rail playing a key role.
COVID-19 Aviation Associations Taskforce – draft position paper
7 April 2021: The European aviation industry associations have released a joint position paper outlining the need for co-ordinated action at an EU level to restart travel and tourism ahead of the summer season.
EUROCONTROL Think Paper on the perfect green flight
20 April 2021: On 20 April, EUROCOTNROL published its 10th Think Paper: Flying the ‘perfect green flight’: How can we make every journey as environmentally friendly as possible? The paper looks at the different aspects of a flight and identifies the opportunities to improve the sustainability at each stage of a flight and challenges faced.

Aviation industry calls for swift implementation of the Digital Green Certificate
21 April 2021: The trade associations representing Europe’s airlines and airports wrote this week to the head of governments of EU/EEA Member States to underline the urgency of easing and ultimately lifting current travel restrictions.
EC proposes re-opening non-essential travel to the EU
5 May 2021: The European Commission has put forward a proposal on reopening non-essential travel from outside of the EU. Once the proposal is adopted by the Council - hopefully in the coming days - it will be for Member States to implement the measures set out in the non-binding recommendation.
