NM User Forum addresses sustainability

On 29-30 January, EUROCONTROL’s Network Manager (NM) held their annual User Forum which was attended by over 300 aviation professionals from a wide ranging number of stakeholders; airlines, air navigation service providers, airports, flight plan service providers, trade bodies and associations, including ERA.

Whilst 2019’s User Forum focussed on the lack of capacity and the subsequent high delays experienced by airlines and passengers the previous summer, 2020’s Forum opened with a keynote address from EUROCONTROL’s Director General, Eamonn Brennan, who reflected on the urgent need to address sustainability as we move into the new decade.

Recognising the efforts made by airlines, including those of ERA member Braathens in the context of their 'Perfect Flight' project, he left the audience under no illusion that the European Network needed to support the efforts of other stakeholders to ensure that European airspace and associated infrastructure could deliver the much needed improvements that would underpin sustainable growth moving forwards, as well as deliver the service that the airline customers expect and pay for.

A number of thought-provoking panel sessions were held over the two days with airports, ANSPs and a number of the major carriers providing their views on operational performance, their expectations for the few years as well as the audience getting an insight on the NM Operational Excellence programme. Launching in mid-February, this project is something ERA has been approached to support and we look forward to providing members further details in due course.

Outside the main conference area, there was plenty of opportunity to meet and discuss with stakeholders and a variety of NM experts who also showcased a number of initiatives designed to improve operational and environmental performance.
