Boosting Regional Air Connectivity

ERA’s airline members play a crucial role in connecting Europe’s regions, supporting social and economic growth and ensuring access to essential services for local communities. Regional air connectivity also benefits local economies as it enables SMEs to participate fully in the European Single Market.

PSO routes are vital for remote and insular communities, and ERA advocates for a stable EU regulatory framework to ensure sustainable regional connectivity, fair competition and financial support for new routes.

PUBLIC Service Obligations STUDY

Public Service Obligations (PSOs) are a key instrument in sustaining Europe’s connectivity. These routes enable air links to be maintained between strategically important territories, guaranteeing citizens access to vital
services such as healthcare, education and business. We believe that maintaining these essential routes is vital for the future viability of regional airlines and the connectivity and services they provide.

In 2024, ERA authored a study examining the varying implementation of the current framework across Europe, in order to make policy recommendations in the context of the forthcoming revision of EU 1008/2008, the Air Services Regulation.
