2018 Day 3 report

Day 3

Inspiration for success

Thursday morning, 11 October featured this year’s inspirational speaker Matthew Syed. Matthew focussed on a thought-provoking approach to high performance in the context of a complex and fast-changing world, drawing on a vast array of case studies and real-world examples across sport, business, education and politics. He gave the audience an inside story of how success really happens – and how we cannot grow unless we are prepared to learn from our mistakes. “Expertise isn’t just what we know, but also finding out what we don’t know”, he commented, and his inspiring talk certainly kept the audience highly engaged throughout.

The news conferences continued on the Thursday with the Airline of the Year Gold Award winner Loganair and winner of the Airline of the Year Bronze Award, Titan Airways, presenting. Jonathan Hinkles, Managing Director of Loganair, explained how the airline is growing rapidly and has seen a 40 per cent increase in customers using the airline’s connections with British Airways. Loganair rebuilt its commercial infrastructure since its franchise agreement with Flybe ended in 2017 and serves remote areas of Scotland in tough and challenging conditions.

Graham Baguley of Titan Airways then shared the latest news for the airline. 2017 proved to be one of the busiest in Titan’s three-decade history. It mounted a significant and unprecedented repatriation effort when Monarch Airlines, the UK’s fourth largest airline, abruptly stopped flying, rendering 110,000 passengers stranded in Europe and beyond. Over an intense 14 days, Titan Airways’ ‘pop-up’ operation briefly became the third largest airline in the UK. Its rescue flying bolstered turnover by seven per cent, with Titan becoming a £100 million revenue airline in its 30th year, and for the first time in its history.

The ERA Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place each year at the ERA General Assembly and is a great opportunity for members to vote on strategic issues. The results of the elections for the ERA Board were also announced at the AGM. Roy Kinnear of Flybe, Warner Rootliep of KLM Cityhopper and Sandrine de Saint Sauveur of APG Airlines were elected as new regular airline board members. Clemente Affinito of ATR and Yoshihisa Kumagai of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation were re-elected as associate board members. After the well-attended AGM and the news conferences, a delicious networking lunch gathered all the delegates together in the exhibition area.

With Edinburgh’s wonderful hospitality and a record number of delegates attending the event, the ERA General Assembly was once again a great success. Next year’s venue has already been confirmed – the 2019 ERA General Assembly will be held on 8–10 October 2019 at the Congress Centre in Antibes / Juan Les Pins in France. Don’t miss this exciting event next year and mark the dates in your calendar now!
