EUROCONTROL Data Snapshot – How Connected is Europe?

13 December 2022: The latest data snapshot from EUROCONTROL looks at the capitals of Bulgaria, Belgium and the UK to see how aviation connectivity varies across the continent. It also offers indicators to try to provide an understanding of the level of connectivity across European cities supported by a new European connectivity web interface.

In order to provide connectivity insights, EUROCONTROL have developed a flight choice indicator that provides an understanding of the various booking options from a certain origin. To measure the connectivity between a specific city and the other European countries, all departure airports within 90 minutes’ drive from the city are considered. For example, for Brussels the calculation considers departures from 28 airports, including Charleroi and Liège but also airports in neighbouring countries like Lille or Eindhoven.

The snapshot shows aviation connectivity for Brussels, London and Sofia for direct flights to EU States and the UK in a typical week in September 2022 (04-10 Sep) compared to the European average.

ERA, with the support of the EUROCONTROL Aviation Intelligence Unit, is currently analysing data with a focus on the connectivity impact to the regions post pandemic. Members can expect further updates on this particular topic early next year.
